If you’re wondering how to stop acid reflux, and the symptoms associated with it, namely, heartburn, then read on to find out more. Furthermore, we will run you through just how easy it is to order life-changing medication, direct to your door.

What Is Heartburn And Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux occurs when acid from the stomach travels in an upwards direction towards the oesophagus, facilitating tissue irritation. This causes one of the more unpleasant symptoms of the condition, which is described as a burning feeling behind the breastbone and can make the sufferer feel very uncomfortable and is more commonly known as heartburn.

Other symptoms of acid reflux include:

  • Regurgitation of food
  • A sour acidic taste in the mouth
  • An upset stomach
  • Hiccups

Other symptoms relating to indigestion include:

  • A sensation of fullness
  • Bloating
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Belching
  • Flatulence

If you suffer from acid reflux and heartburn, you may well find that your symptoms are worse after meals, or when you are lying down or bending over.

What Are The Causes Of Heartburn And Acid Reflux?

It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly why heartburn and acid reflux happen, but one of the causes is due to weakness in the oesophageal sphincter which allows stomach acid to escape into the oesophagus. A hiatus hernia, where part of your stomach moves into your chest area, can also cause acid reflux followed by heartburn.

It can also happen after you have eaten spicy or fatty foods, including chocolate, or had coffee or alcohol to drink. Being overweight, smoking, pregnancy and stress can also trigger acid reflux and heartburn.

What different treatments are available?

Fortunately, there are a number of different treatments available to tackle this unpleasant condition. Some of these are as simple as making small changes to your lifestyle, such as avoiding food and drink that can bring on an attack, losing weight, stopping smoking, reducing stress, eating smaller meals more frequently and avoiding eating just before bedtime. You can also raise the head end of your bed by 10 to 20 cm so that stomach acid can’t travel upwards and make you uncomfortable. Unfortunately, sometimes these methods aren’t enough. Thankfully, we have a number of different medications that can help you with acid reflux and its associated symptoms.

Proton pump inhibitors such as Pantoprazole, Lansoprazole and Omeprazole stop enzymes in the stomach lining from producing excessive acid and are particularly effective at treating acid reflux.
