    Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray UK

Mometasone furoate nasal spray contains a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation in the nose. It gets to work at the site of the problem for fast relief from sneezing, itching, and a blocked or runny nose.

Mometasone spray is an alternative to Nasonex, and is used to treat allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps in adults over 18. Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation of the nose caused by allergens, such as dust mites, animal hair, or pollen (hay fever).

In some people, pollen is mistaken for a threat and the body’s immune system releases antibodies that cause inflammation. Common allergy symptoms include:

    • Sore, red eyes
    • Coughing and sneezing
    • Blocked or runny nose
    • Itchy throat

Mometasone nasal spray contains a synthetic steroid which works to reduce the inflammation that causes sneezing, itching, and a blocked or runny nose. It gets to work fast with results in just 12 hours (in some people, it can take up to two days.)

If you have suffered from hay fever for a long time, we recommend that you start using mometasone two to three weeks before the hay fever season starts and continue up to three months after.

How to use Mometasone Furoate nasal spray

Before you start using mometasone, you must prime the bottle by pumping the spray ten times until a fine mist is produced. If you have not used it for 14 days or more, pump the spray twice to re-prime the device.

For adults and children over 12, the recommended daily dose is two sprays in each nostril once a day – this can be reduced once your symptoms are under control. If you don’t see an improvement in your symptoms, speak to your doctor or pharmacist about increasing the dose.

Children aged three to 11 years, should use one spray in each nostril once a day.

We recommend reading the patient information leaflet before you start treatment.

Side effects can occur in some people taking mometasone furoate. In rare cases, it can cause an immediate allergic reaction (hypersensitivity). If this happens, stop taking the medicine immediately and seek urgent medical help. Symptoms of a reaction include:

    • Swollen face, tongue, or throat
