In this article, we answer 5 frequently asked questions about erectile dysfunction and debunk 5 common myths.

5 COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

WHAT IS ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION?

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a condition where you are unable to get or keep an erection. An erection occurs when your brain sends signals to your penis when you’re sexually stimulated. This makes the blood vessels in your penis relax, causing an erection.

Anything that stops this process is referred to as ED.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ED?

There are both physical and psychological erectile dysfunction causes. The physical reasons could be related to your central nervous system or a hormonal issue, or it could be triggered by neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s.

However psychological reasons like stress, anxiety and depression could also cause ED.

CAN ED BE CURED?

In some cases, erectile dysfunction symptoms are reversible. You can change your lifestyle to tackle some of the physical challenges that cause ED which should reverse the effects, or there is surgery that can be performed if required. There are also medications available to manage the symptoms of ED.

DOES ED MEAN I AM NOT SEXUALLY ATTRACTED TO MY PARTNER ANYMORE?

Although that can be a reason you are struggling to get an erection, there are a lot of different causes of ED – so if you’re unsure, speak to a medical professional.

DOES ED MEDICATION AFFECT FERTILITY?

Studies have been carried out and shown that the use of ED medication doesn’t affect your sperm count or fertility. Read our blog Does Sildenafil impact your fertility? to find out more.

5 MYTHS ABOUT ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION – DEBUNKED

We investigate some of the most common myths around erectile dysfunction and explain if there is any truth behind them.

YOUR LIFESTYLE WON’T CAUSE ED

This is not true; your lifestyle can contribute to or cause ED, this includes:

  • Excessively drinking alcohol
  • Use of illegal drugs
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Unhealthy diet

DIABETES CAUSES ED

There is evidence to suggest that diabetes can cause you to suffer from ED. Men who suffer from diabetes tend to suffer from high blood sugar levels, which can cause damage to the central nervous system and blood vessels in your body, therefore could lead to them suffering from ED.

ED DOESN’T AFFECT YOUNG MEN

ED is something that affects nearly 12 million men in the UK. Although ED is most common in men aged over 40, a study carried out in 2019 found that 35.6% of men aged 18-25 suffered from the condition, and 30.7% of men aged between 26-40 also suffered[1]

TOO MUCH PORN CAUSES ED

There is no evidence to say that watching porn every so often can cause ED. Excessively watching porn or porn addiction can lead to overstimulation or unrealistic expectations, which could affect their ability to get an erection. However, there are no studies that prove or disprove this theory.

IF VIAGRA DOESN’T WORK, THERE ARE NO MORE OPTIONS

There are four different erectile dysfunction pills, known as PDE5 inhibitors, that are used to treat ED in the UK. They work by relaxing the blood vessels at the base of your penis when you are aroused, to cause an erection.

They all achieve the same goal but contain different ingredients. So, if you find that Viagra doesn’t give you the desired effect, then there are other options for you to explore. Take a look at our guide to choosing the right erectile dysfunction medication.
