Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a very common condition that can affect men no matter what age they are. But it is not a ‘permanent’ problem, there are different medications (including, but not limited to, Viagra) available to treat Erectile Dysfunction.

This article explores what the condition is and how it can be treated.

WHAT IS ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION?

Erectile Dysfunction is not being able to get or keep an erection. This is a condition that a lot of men suffer from at one point in life, no matter how old they are, although it tends to be more common in men over 40.

There are some physical causes of ED, such as high blood pressure, obesity, and conditions that affect your nervous system. However, more commonly, ED is a temporary problem that can be caused by depression or stress and anxiety, and will often return to normal when your mental health improves.

One solution, be it short term or long term, is medication.

MEDICATION TO TREAT ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

The medications used to treat ED works by relaxing arteries at the bottom of the penis to improve the blood flow and to produce an erection. They only work when you are sexually aroused.

The most common medication for ED is Viagra, also known as the ‘blue pill’, but this medication may not work for everyone.

There is a group of four different medications that treat ED, including Viagra, which are approved for UK use and part of a family of medications called PDE5 inhibitors. The other medications are Levitra, Cialis and Spedra.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT MEDICATIONS

All of these medications work in the same way and give the same result, the main difference is that each drug contains a different active ingredient.

There isn’t just one medication that suites everyone, the key is to find the medication that works best for you. If you have been taking one medication for a long time and have not found it very effective, speak to a GP or pharmacist to discuss your other options.

Some other differences between the medications include the strengths, the quantities of tablets you can buy and the price differences between the branded and non-branded drugs.
