What is Azithromycin?
Azithromycin is an antibiotic commonly prescribed to treat various infections including sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. The branded version of this medication is known as Zithromax. Azithromycin is from a group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics, used to treat bacterial infections.
How effective is Azithromycin in treating Chlamydia?
Azithromycin is a highly effective antibiotic for the treatment of Chlamydia. When taken correctly, this antibiotic has been found to be successful in treating Chlamydial infection in up to 95% of all cases.
Azithromycin works to destroy bacteria responsible for the infection by stopping them from producing the proteins they need to survive. Also this antibiotic remains in the body for a long period of time to prevent recolonisation of the bacteria which cause this infection.
Azithromycin vs Doxycycline for treatment of Chlamydia
Both medications are useful at treating uncomplicated urogenital chlamydia infection. They are both antibiotics but work in different ways. Doxycycline is now recommended as first line treatment for this infection, whilst Azithromycin is an useful alternative for those individuals who cannot tolerate Doxycycline or other Tetracycline antibiotics.
How do I take Azithromycin?
How much azithromycin is needed to cure chlamydia? For the treatment of Chlamydia, TWO tablets of Azithromycin 500mg tablets should be taken as a single dose on day one followed by 500mg daily for the next TWO days. Therefore a total of FOUR tablets of 500mg will be required to complete this longer course.
Please note: this is a new dose for this medication in line with the updated national guidance for the treatment of Chlamydia.
The tablets should be swallowed whole with half a glass of water before or after food.
More about Azithromycin 500mg
As a member of the family of antibiotics known as macrolides, Azithromycin has the powerful ability to prevent bacterial infections from spreading. It does this by inhibiting peptide activity and protein production in the bacteria. This then enables the body’s immune system to tackle the invading bacteria cells.
Azithromycin also differs from many other antibiotic medications due to its ability to remain in the system for long periods, which means that courses of treatment are typically shorter than with other antibiotics. Nevertheless it is critical that patients complete the prescribed course of antibiotic treatment to ensure that the infection clears. In some instances, even though the symptoms may disappear, it can return swiftly if the treatment course is not completed.
As with all antibiotic treatments, failing to complete a course enables the bacteria to build up a resistance.
Once a course of Azithromycin is completed it is recommended that you wait a few weeks before completing another sexually transmitted infection (STI) test to confirm you are cured.
Azithromycin UK: directions for use
Azithromycin is a medication that is only available on prescription and cannot be purchased over the counter. It is advised that Azithromycin tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water no less than an hour before meals or at least two hours after a meal. Should you miss a dose, take a 500mg tablet as soon as you remember. However, it is important never to double dose as this can lead to heightened risk of side effects.
Typically, Azithromycin is recommended as a second-line, alternative treatment to Doxycycline for the treatment of chlamydia. It is reserved for those who have found Doxycycline to be ineffective or have had a reaction to it.
